TLDR Many dermatologists believe finasteride can cause sexual side effects and counsel patients about them.
This study surveyed 122 dermatologists to assess their beliefs and counseling practices regarding the adverse effects of finasteride, a medication known to potentially cause low libido, erectile dysfunction, male infertility, and depression. With an 82% participation rate, 51% of respondents believed finasteride could cause sexual side effects, and 18% believed these effects could be persistent. Less than 25% thought it could cause depression or lower sperm counts. When prescribing finasteride, 69% counseled at least half of their patients about potential sexual side effects, 52% about persistent sexual side effects, and 30% about depression. The study highlights the need for improved awareness and counseling practices concerning finasteride's adverse effects.
