TLDR Systemic cyproterone acetate and 5% topical minoxidil are effective and safe for treating female pattern hair loss.
The study assessed the efficacy and safety of systemic cyproterone acetate and 5% topical minoxidil in treating female pattern hair loss (FPHL) over six months. It involved 26 female patients at Abassi Shaheed Hospital/Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi. The treatment regimen included 2 mg cyproterone acetate and 35 µg ethinyl estradiol (Diane35®) for 21 days each cycle, 50 mg cyproterone acetate for 10 days along with Diane35, and 5% topical minoxidil applied twice daily. Results showed a statistically significant improvement in hair growth and no progression of FPHL, with both treatments being well tolerated. The conclusion was that systemic cyproterone acetate and 5% topical minoxidil were effective and safe for FPHL.
