TLDR Cyproterone acetate effectively treats female hair loss by increasing healthy hair and decreasing unhealthy hair, but doesn't change hair thickness.
The study investigated the effect of cyproterone acetate on hair roots and hair shaft diameter in female patients with androgenetic alopecia. Twenty patients were treated with ethinylestradiol plus cyproterone acetate for one year, while eight patients served as the control group. The results showed that the treated group had an increase in anagen hair and a decrease in telogen hair, which was statistically significant. There was also a decrease in dysplastic/dystrophic forms of hair. However, there were no significant differences in the hair shaft diameter and the number of hairs measuring less than 40 µm. Overall, the study concluded that cyproterone acetate appears to be effective in treating androgenetic alopecia in women.
