Androgen Receptor Expression in Male Pattern Baldness Patients

TLDR Increased androgen receptor expression in certain hair follicle areas may cause male pattern baldness.
The study investigated androgen receptor (AR) expression in hair follicles from different scalp areas of 10 male androgenetic alopecia (AGA) patients and 3 individuals with normal scalps. It found that AR expression was significantly stronger in the hair follicle bulge and infundibulum of hair loss and transitional areas compared to the occipital area and normal controls. However, AR expression in the epidermis showed no significant difference across scalp areas but differed from normal controls. In sebaceous glands, AR expression did not significantly differ among groups. The findings suggested that increased AR expression in specific hair follicle regions might be a key factor in male pattern hair loss.
