TLDR A substance called 15-deoxy prostaglandin J2 can cause hair follicle cells to die, which might explain how prostaglandin D2 can lead to hair loss.
The study explored the impact of 15-deoxy prostaglandin J2 (15-dPGJ2) on human hair follicle cells, finding that while low concentrations slightly stimulated cell growth, higher concentrations (5 µM) significantly reduced cell viability and induced apoptosis in both outer root sheath (ORS) and dermal papilla (DP) cells. This apoptotic effect was dose-dependent and suggests that 15-dPGJ2 could contribute to the transition from the hair growth phase to the regression phase, potentially explaining the role of prostaglandin D2 in hair loss. The study implies that targeting the PGD2-DP2 receptor pathway may offer a new approach for treating hair loss, such as androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The research was conducted with the approval of the Medical Ethics Committee of the Kyungpook National University Hospital, Korea, and was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea. Specific participant numbers were not mentioned.
