TLDR Human hair follicles contain a complex network of prostanoid receptors that may influence hair growth.
The study investigated the expression of various prostanoid receptors in anagen human hair follicles, revealing a complex network with distinct localization patterns. Using RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry, it was found that all prostanoid receptors except EP1 were present, with specific receptors linked to different cellular functions and locations. EP1, EP2, and EP3 were found in non-proliferating areas, while EP4 was associated with differentiation. DP1 and DP2 were involved in wound healing, and the IP receptor had a unique distribution in hair shaft cuticle cells. TP receptor was highly expressed in melanocytes and hair synthesis areas, and FP receptor, known for its role in hair regrowth, was confirmed in various hair compartments. The findings suggested that prostanoid receptor profiles are cell-specific within the hair follicle, which could have implications for understanding hair growth regulation.
