December 2022 in “Sultan Qaboos University medical journal” The study designed a machine learning framework to predict Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) in a cohort of 219 Omani patients, with 138 having SLE and 81 having other rheumatologic diseases. Using Recursive Feature Selection (RFE) and the CatBoost classification algorithm, the model achieved an AUC score of 0.95 and a Sensitivity of 92%. The SHAP algorithm identified alopecia, renal disorders, Acute Cutaneous Lupus, hemolytic anemia, and patient age as key predictive features. The framework provides explainable predictions validated by rheumatologists, enabling early intervention and improved healthcare outcomes.

July 2024 in “Clinical Case Reports” Antinuclear antibody (ANA)-negative lupus nephritis (LN) is rare but significant, as seen in a 25-year-old female with symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but negative ANA tests. Despite initial diagnostic challenges, clinical judgment led to a diagnosis of LN, and prompt treatment resulted in significant improvement. A subsequent renal biopsy confirmed diffuse class IV LN with full-house nephropathy. This case emphasizes the need for a comprehensive diagnostic approach beyond ANA positivity, incorporating clinical features and immunological markers, to ensure timely and life-saving intervention in ANA-negative SLE patients.
