TLDR Acanthospermum hispidum is toxic to mice, causing death and damage to internal organs.
The study investigated the toxicity of Acanthospermum hispidum in 50 albino mice, which were fed varying concentrations (1-50%) of the plant's shoots and seeds. All dose levels proved toxic, causing death within 9 to 172 days. Symptoms of poisoning included diarrhea, dyspnea, alopecia, and general deterioration. Autopsies revealed significant organ damage, including fatty changes and necrosis in the liver, renal glomerular shrinkage, and hemorrhage and congestion in the spleen, lungs, and heart, along with catarrhal enteritis.
