TLDR Dunaliella salina microalgae is safe to eat and may boost health.
The study assessed the toxicity of Dunaliella salina microalgae in mice and rats over three months, administering 100 mg/kg body weight daily. Results showed no significant toxic effects, mortality, or behavioral abnormalities, and no significant changes in hematological and biochemical parameters or histopathological examination of cardiac, renal, and hepatic tissues. A notable finding was the marked elevation in hemoglobin levels, likely due to the immune-stimulant activity of β-carotene. The study concluded that Dunaliella salina is safe for consumption at the tested dosage and may be beneficial as a food additive or therapeutic agent.
