    GlossaryLive Attenuated Vaccine

weakened pathogen used to stimulate immune response without causing disease

A Live Attenuated Vaccine (LAV) is a type of vaccine created by reducing the virulence of a pathogen, but still keeping it viable (or "live"). This means the pathogen is weakened so it can't cause disease in healthy individuals, but it can still stimulate a strong immune response. Examples include the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
