TLDR Valproic acid treatment may cause hair loss due to reduced biotinidase activity.
This study examined the link between valproic acid (VPA) treatment, biotinidase activity, and hair loss in 150 Indian participants, with 75 in the VPA group and 75 in the control group. It found that 24% of the VPA-treated group experienced hair loss, compared to 2.66% in the control group, and identified significantly lower biotinidase levels in those with hair loss. The study suggests a connection between VPA treatment and reduced biotinidase activity leading to hair loss, and highlights the need for clinicians to consider this side effect. It also recommends further research into other biomarkers and the potential for biotin supplements to mitigate hair loss.
