Thyroxine (T4) May Promote Re-Epithelialization and Angiogenesis in Wounded Human Skin Ex Vivo

    TLDR Thyroxine (T4) may help heal skin wounds by promoting new skin and blood vessel growth.
    The study developed a serum-free full thickness human skin wound healing model to investigate wound healing processes and identify potential therapeutic agents. Preliminary ex vivo data suggested that Thyroxine (T4) might enhance human skin wound healing by promoting re-epithelialisation and angiogenesis, and influencing keratin expression and energy metabolism. The effects of T4 were partially mediated through fibroblast growth factor receptor signaling, as shown by the antagonistic effect of a bFGF-neutralizing antibody. This model served as a valuable tool for preclinical research, supporting further investigation of T4 as a potential topical treatment for chronic skin wounds.
