TLDR Both treatments for alopecia areata showed similar modest effectiveness.
This randomized controlled study compared the efficacy and safety of topical sodium valproate (SV)-loaded nanospanlastics to conventional topical corticosteroids in treating 66 patients with patchy alopecia areata (AA). Both treatments showed comparable modest efficacy, with significant improvement in treated patches compared to untreated control patches. Beta-catenin levels and Axin-2 gene expression were reduced after treatment, indicating an inhibitory effect on inflammation. Baseline beta-catenin levels negatively correlated with treatment improvement. The study suggests further evaluation of SV in combination with other treatments and individualized approaches based on baseline beta-catenin levels.
