TLDR Certain skin conditions can indicate a higher risk of diabetes and heart problems.
Metabolic syndrome, characterized by hypertension, central obesity, insulin resistance, and dyslipidaemia, is increasingly prevalent due to sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary habits. This syndrome leads to oxidative stress and inflammation, contributing to various skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne vulgaris, acanthosis nigricans, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis, androgenetic alopecia, and lichen planus. These dermatoses share common etiopathogenic factors with metabolic syndrome and signal an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular damage. Early diagnosis and management, including lifestyle changes and medication, are crucial to mitigate these risks.
