TLDR Platelet-rich plasma, taken from a person's own blood, can help rejuvenate skin, stimulate hair growth, and treat hair loss, but more research is needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness.
The 2018 review by Ebtisam Elghblawi explored the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in aesthetic dermatology, particularly for skin rejuvenation and hair growth. PRP, derived from patients' own blood, was found to stimulate the healing process at the cellular level, restore skin's youthful appearance, and stimulate hair growth. It was also found to promote wound healing, aid in facelifts, improve wrinkling, and increase hair follicle viability. PRP was also used in treating hair loss, particularly androgenic alopecia, by stimulating the stem cells of the hair follicle bulge area. However, the review noted a lack of standardization in techniques and insufficient description of adopted procedures. The document concluded that while PRP showed promise, more extensive independent research and double-blind clinical trials were needed to confirm its effectiveness, efficiency, and safety.
