TLDR Hair loss, known as androgenetic alopecia, is mainly caused by genetics, but also by hormone imbalances, shrinking hair follicles, inflammation, and environmental factors.
The 2019 study "Pathogenesis of androgenetic alopecia" explored the causes of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the most common type of non-scarring hair loss. The research indicated that the pathogenesis of AGA involves multiple factors including genetic background, abnormal sex hormone metabolism, miniaturization of hair follicles, inflammatory response in the follicular microenvironment, and environmental factors. Among these, genetic susceptibility was identified as the most significant factor causing individual differences in AGA. Abnormal sex hormone metabolism and/or inflammation-induced follicular miniaturization were identified as the final links in the pathogenesis of AGA.
