TLDR Men with early hair loss may have higher insulin resistance and should be checked for related health issues.
The 2017 study "Role of Insulin Resistance in Males with Early Androgenetic Alopecia" involved 30 males with early androgenetic alopecia (EAA) and 30 healthy controls. The study found a significant increase in insulin resistance, serum cholesterol, triglycerides, serum insulin, systolic blood pressure, body mass index, and waist circumference in the EAA group compared to the control group. Insulin resistance increased with the progression of EAA and age, but was not significantly associated with the duration or family history of EAA. Smoking significantly impacted insulin resistance in both groups. The study concluded that there is a strong association between insulin resistance, EAA, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinaemia, and hyperglycemia in males with EAA, suggesting that males with EAA should be screened for these conditions.
