TLDR Nutraceutical insulin-sensitizing agents may help treat skin conditions like psoriasis and acne.
This review examines the potential of nutraceutical insulin-sensitizing agents (ISAs) in managing dermatological diseases associated with insulin resistance (IR), such as psoriasis, acne, and hidradenitis suppurativa. IR contributes to these conditions through inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. Agents like myo-inositol, alpha-lipoic acid, and vitamins D and C have shown promise in improving insulin signaling, reducing oxidative stress, and modulating inflammation. Notably, myo-inositol, especially when combined with magnesium and folic acid, has demonstrated significant benefits in conditions like PCOS-related acne, with studies involving up to 200 participants reporting improvements without adverse effects. However, the review emphasizes the need for more extensive randomized controlled trials to confirm these findings and establish optimal treatment protocols.
