TLDR Hair follicle and adipose cell vesicles both protect neurons and reduce inflammation similarly.
The study compared the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from hair follicle mesenchymal stromal cells (HF-MSCs) and adipose tissue mesenchymal stromal cells (AT-MSCs) on primary neuronal and microglial cultures. Both HF-MSC and AT-MSC EVs significantly increased cell viability in dopaminergic neuron cultures exposed to neurotoxins and reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β in LPS-stimulated microglial cultures. The findings suggest that HF-MSC EVs have comparable therapeutic potential to AT-MSC EVs for treating neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting HF-MSCs as a viable and less invasive source for EV-based therapies.
