A retrospective study conducted at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo’s Cosmetic Dermatology Outpatient Clinic in Indonesia from January 2017 to December 2019 examined the prevalence of hair disorders among 64 patients. The study found that hair disorders were more common in males (54.6%), with an average age of 26.41 years. The most prevalent age group was 18-39 years old (59.4%). The most common hair disorders were alopecia areata (50.0% of cases), alopecia androgenetic (31.2% of cases), and telogen effluvium (14.0% of cases). Two cases of cicatricial alopecia due to lupus erythematosus and one case of trichotillomania were also reported. Female patients had significantly more cases of telogen effluvium. Early-onset alopecia androgenetic, with an average age of 29.45 years, showed a significant positive familial history.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
