TLDR In 2017, Spanish dermatologists commonly prescribed topical minoxidil, oral finasteride, and nutricosmetics for hair loss, with oral contraceptives also used for premenopausal women. Less common were oral dutasteride, due to side effects, and newer, more expensive treatments like topical finasteride and Low-Level Laser Therapy. The conclusion is that there's a need for prescription guidelines due to varied treatment approaches.
In 2018, a study of 241 Spanish dermatologists' prescribing habits for androgenic alopecia found that the most common treatments for male and postmenopausal female patients were topical minoxidil, oral finasteride, and nutricosmetics. For premenopausal women, oral contraceptives were also commonly prescribed. Despite oral dutasteride's reported effectiveness, it was less commonly prescribed due to potential adverse effects. Newer treatments like topical finasteride and Low-Level Laser Therapy were more often prescribed in the private sector due to their higher cost. The study concluded that there was significant variation in the clinical management of androgenic alopecia in Spain, indicating a need for prescription guidelines.
