TLDR Dutasteride is more effective than finasteride at increasing hair count and reversing hair thinning in men with hair loss, but both have similar side effects.
In a study conducted 6 years ago involving 90 men with androgenetic alopecia, dutasteride was found to be significantly more effective than finasteride in increasing hair count and reversing hair miniaturization over a 24-week period. The dutasteride group saw a mean change in total hair count of 23.14/cm^2, compared to 4.3/cm^2 in the finasteride group. Thin hair counts also decreased more in the dutasteride group (7.37/cm^2) compared to the finasteride group (1.27/cm^2). However, there was no significant difference in the size of the vertex balding spot, hair shedding, and hair quality between the two groups. Both drugs had similar incidences of adverse events. The study had limitations including a short duration, a small sample size, and being an open-label study.
