TLDR In Spain, dermatologists most commonly prescribe topical minoxidil and oral finasteride for male hair loss, and topical minoxidil and oral contraceptives for female hair loss. The use of oral dutasteride and oral minoxidil has significantly increased over the past three years.
In 2020, a study was conducted on the prescribing habits for Androgenic Alopecia among 243 Spanish dermatologists. The most commonly prescribed treatments for male AGA were topical minoxidil (100%), oral finasteride (92.6%), oral dutasteride (75.7%), and oral minoxidil (50.6%). For premenopausal female AGA, the most common treatments were topical minoxidil (99%), oral contraceptives (75%), nutricosmetics (71%), and oral minoxidil (67.9%). For postmenopausal female AGA, the most common treatments were topical minoxidil (99.2%), oral finasteride (79%), oral dutasteride (71.6%), and oral minoxidil (63%). Over the three years prior to the study, the prescription of oral dutasteride and oral minoxidil had increased significantly for all types of AGA.
