TLDR Dutasteride helps hair growth in those unresponsive to finasteride, but may cause more sexual dysfunction.
The study found that dutasteride at a dose of 0.5 mg/d could be an alternative therapeutic option for patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) who did not respond to finasteride. Hair density and thickness significantly increased by 10.3% and 18.9%, respectively, in phototrichogram assessment. However, the incidence of dutasteride-related sexual dysfunction is reported to be higher than with finasteride, so further research is required to identify the incidence of dutasteride-related sexual dysfunction and the timing to switch to dutasteride if there was no clinical improvement.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.
