TLDR CUR-loaded micelles improve skin delivery and effects of curcumin for pain and infections.
The study developed octadecylamine modified hyaluronic acid (OHA) copolymer micelles to enhance the transdermal delivery of curcumin (CUR), which is limited by poor water solubility. The CUR-loaded micelles (CUR-M) improved CUR's skin permeation and retention, with a drug loading of 8.26% and encapsulation efficiency of 90.86%, increasing CUR's solubility to 1.47 mg/mL. The micelles had a particle size of 165.64 nm and a zeta potential of -26.85 mV, indicating good stability. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that CUR-M had better skin penetration and retention than CUR solutions, leading to improved analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects without skin irritation. The study concluded that CUR-loaded micelles could be a promising transdermal delivery system for treating topical pain and skin infections, though further clinical evaluation was needed.
