TLDR The hydrogel helps heal wounds and regrow hair by mimicking a baby's environment.
The study developed a fetal environment-simulating hydrogel, named HA-DA-CS/Zn-ATV, composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), chondroitin sulfate (CS), dopamine (DA), zinc citrate (ZnCit), and atorvastatin (ATV) to promote wound healing and hair follicle regeneration. The hydrogel mimics the fetal extracellular matrix (ECM) and provides a moist environment for wound healing. It has good tissue adhesion, mechanical strength, and self-healing capacity, making it effective in covering wounds and protecting against external stimuli. The hydrogel also has anti-oxidant properties, which help in scavenging reactive oxygen species produced in wounds. The sustained release of ATV from the hydrogel promotes angiogenesis, while the incorporated zinc ions facilitate hair follicle regeneration. Both in vitro and in vivo results confirmed that the HA-DA-CS/Zn-ATV hydrogel accelerates wound healing and hair follicle regeneration.
