TLDR Tea tree oil may help treat scalp alopecia by promoting hair follicle stem cell growth.
Tea tree oil (TTO) extract was studied for its effects on hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) from patients with scalp alopecia areata (SAA). The study involved isolating HFSCs, exposing them to various concentrations of TTO, and assessing cell proliferation and migration. TTO showed significant antibacterial activity against common pathogens and promoted HFSC proliferation and migration, with the optimal effect at 5.0 mmol/L. These findings suggest TTO's potential as a therapeutic agent for SAA.
