TLDR Herbs like Tea Tree Oil and Aloe Vera could be safer, more conditioning antidandruff alternatives to synthetic products.
This systematic review examines the potential of various herbs as antidandruff agents, offering an alternative to synthetic treatments. It identifies the antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties of herbs like Tea Tree Oil, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera, Shikakai, Amla, and Bhringraj, which contribute to their effectiveness in treating dandruff and improving scalp health. Additionally, the review details other herbs such as Reetha, Neem, Tulsi, Ginger, Brahmi, Hibiscus species, Fenugreek, Henna, and Curry leaves, each with specific compounds that exhibit antimicrobial and antifungal activities, and in some cases, aid in sebum regulation and scalp moisturization. The document concludes that herbal formulations, developed based on traditional knowledge, could provide a safer and more conditioning alternative to synthetic antidandruff products, potentially reducing the recurrence of dandruff.
