TLDR Lavender oil promotes hair growth in mice.
The study conducted 8 years ago investigated the effects of lavender oil on hair growth-related enzyme activity and cytokine expression in C57BL/6 mice. The results showed that at week 4, the activities of γ-GT in the lavender oil treated groups were 25%, 11%, and 15% significantly higher than the control group. The expression of growth factors including KGF, IGF-1, HGF, and VEGF also increased over time. Specifically, KGF mRNA expression increased by 15%, 10%, and 10%, IGF-1 mRNA expression increased by 29%, 21%, and 21%, HGF mRNA expression increased by 36%, 14%, and 18%, and VEGF mRNA expression increased by 47%, 24%, and 24% in the lavender oil treated groups compared to the control group. The correlation coefficient between hair growth area and KGF mRNA expression was 0.940. The study concluded that lavender oil has hair growth-promoting effects as identified by hair growth-relevant enzyme activity and cytokine expression in C57BL/6 mice.
