TLDR Rosemary oil may promote hair growth by enhancing enzyme activities and IGF-1 expression.
This study investigated the effects of rosemary oil on enzyme activities and cytokine expression related to hair growth in C57BL/6 mice. The study involved four groups of six-week-old male mice: a normal group (saline), a vehicle control group (jojoba oil), a positive control group (3% minoxidil), and an experimental group (3% rosemary oil). The treatments were applied topically for 4 weeks. Results showed that both the positive control and experimental groups had significantly increased dermal ALP and γ-GT activities, as well as IGF-1 mRNA expression, compared to the normal group. Additionally, SCF antigens were more heavily stained in the bulge and sebaceous gland areas in the rosemary oil and minoxidil groups. These findings suggested that rosemary oil enhanced enzyme activities and IGF-1 mRNA expression in the skin tissues of the mice, indicating its potential to promote hair growth.
