TLDR Rosemary oil can boost hair growth by increasing certain enzyme activities and cytokine expression.
This study investigated the effects of rosemary oil on enzyme activities and cytokine expression related to hair growth in C57BL/6 mice. Six-week-old male mice were divided into four groups: normal (saline), vehicle control (jojoba oil), positive control (3% minoxidil), and experimental (3% rosemary oil). The treatments were applied topically for 4 weeks. Results showed that dermal ALP and γ-GT activities, as well as IGF-1 mRNA expression, were significantly increased in both the positive control and experimental groups compared to the normal group (p<0.05). SCF antigens were heavily stained in the bulge and sebaceous gland in the experimental and positive control groups. These findings suggested that rosemary oil promoted ALP and γ-GT activities and IGF-1 mRNA expression in the skin tissues of C57BL/6 mice.
