TLDR Altered hormones and insulin resistance are common in young men with early hair loss and linked to more severe cases.
This study investigated the clinical and metabolic characteristics of 100 males under 30 years old with early-onset androgenetic alopecia (AGA) of Norwood-Hamilton grade ≥3. The study found that 34% of participants had altered hormonal profiles, which were significantly associated with insulin resistance and severe alopecia (grade 4 and above). Insulin resistance was observed in 44% of the subjects, and 26% had metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was similar in both groups with and without altered hormonal profiles. The study's limitations include its cross-sectional design, lack of a control group without AGA, and an arbitrarily selected sample size. The findings suggest that altered hormonal profiles and insulin resistance are common in males with early-onset AGA and are linked to more severe hair loss.
