TLDR Giving selenium yeast to pregnant goats leads to better hair growth and cashmere quality in their babies.
A study on 60 pregnant Hanshan white cashmere goats found that dietary selenium yeast (SY) supplementation during pregnancy significantly improved the hair follicle development and cashmere production in offspring. The offspring from the SY group had a higher birth weight, increased cashmere fiber length and yield, and finer fiber diameter compared to the control group. The total secondary hair follicles and active secondary hair follicles in the SY group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The serum antioxidant statuses of the kids in the SY group were significantly higher than those in the control group, suggesting that maternal dietary selenium yeast supplementation can enhance the development of hair follicles and improve the quality of cashmere fiber in offspring by enhancing antioxidant capacity and reducing oxidative stress.
