TLDR Eating selenium-rich rice improved antioxidant activity and signs of aging in mice.
The study from April 29, 2019, examined the impact of selenium-rich rice on gene expression and antioxidant activity in naturally aged mice. The mice fed with selenium-rich rice showed improved antioxidant abilities, with higher levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in their serum and liver, indicating better oxidative stress management. They also experienced less hair loss and had denser fur. RNA sequencing revealed 53 differentially expressed genes related to various biological processes, including immune response and longevity. The study found that selenium-rich rice enhanced antioxidant activity and positively affected aging phenotypes in mice, suggesting that organic selenium from this rice could be beneficial for animal health. However, the study recommended further molecular research to fully understand the metabolic pathways involved.
