TLDR Mast cells might contribute to hair loss by causing skin thickening.
This 15-year-old study investigated the relationship between mast cells and male pattern hair loss (MPHL). The study found that there was a significant increase in collagen bundles and elastic fibers in balding areas compared to non-balding areas of MPHL patients. Additionally, the total number of mast cells was higher in MPHL subjects than in normal controls. The study suggests that mast cells may play a role in the development of dermal fibrosis in MPHL, and further research is needed to explore this potential mechanism.
