TLDR AKN is a chronic scalp condition in African-descended males, treated with topicals, antibiotics, steroids, and sometimes surgery or laser.
Acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting hair follicles, leading to scarring alopecia, primarily in the occipital scalp and posterior neck. It predominantly affects individuals of African descent but can also impact Hispanic and Asian populations. AKN is associated with comorbidities like hidradenitis suppurativa, metabolic syndrome, and hypothyroidism. Prevention includes educating barbers on proper techniques to avoid trauma. Treatment options range from topical corticosteroids and antibiotics to invasive procedures like cryotherapy and laser treatments, with Nd: YAG laser preferred for deeper penetration. Early management is crucial to prevent further follicular destruction and scarring, and comprehensive care is necessary due to associated inflammatory and metabolic disorders. Further studies are needed to compare treatment efficacy.
