TLDR CD34 is absent in most basal cell carcinoma cells but present in surrounding skin.
This study examined the immunohistochemical distribution of CD34 in 100 cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and surrounding skin. CD34 was absent in the neoplastic cells of BCC but showed strong positivity in the juxtatumoral zone, particularly in solid-cystic and nodular BCCs. The study found CD34-positive fibroblast-like cells in the transitional and marginal skin zones, suggesting a specific pattern of CD34 distribution that may play a role in the skin's adaptive response to BCC. The findings highlight the potential role of CD34 in stabilizing the stromal network and counteracting tumor cell migration, with implications for understanding the tumor microenvironment and the skin's protective mechanisms against neoplastic processes.
