TLDR Basal cell carcinoma shows keratin patterns similar to hair follicle structures.
The study examined the immunohistochemical profiles of 23 cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) using three keratin antibodies. In normal skin, keratin 1, 14, and 17 were expressed in specific skin structures, such as the epidermis and hair follicles. In BCC, keratin 14 and 17 were consistently found in all cases, while keratin 1 was sporadically expressed in 3 cases. The findings suggested that the keratin expression pattern in BCC resembled that of the pilosebaceous apparatus.
