TLDR Basal cell carcinoma shows keratin patterns similar to hair follicle structures.
The study examined the immunohistochemical profiles of 23 cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and compared them with adjacent normal skin using three keratin antibodies. In normal skin, different keratins were expressed in specific skin structures, while in BCC, keratin 14 and 17 were consistently found in all cases, and keratin 1 was sporadically expressed in 3 cases. The findings suggested that the keratin expression in BCC resembled that of the pilosebaceous apparatus.
