TLDR The basement membrane matrix helps rebuild hair follicles faster and more effectively.
The study conducted by Xiao, Shune MD et al., 6 years ago, demonstrated that a basement membrane matrix significantly improved the efficiency of hair follicle reconstruction. The matrix was used to suspend newborn mouse skin cells and transplanted in a chamber assay. The results showed that the matrix significantly shortened the time to hair formation, with the first hair shafts appearing within the matrix at 17.67 ± 1.21 days compared to 23.00 ± 1.41 days for controls. There was also a significant increase in the number of newly formed hairs in areas of reconstructed skin with the matrix grafts (323 ± 12) versus controls (276 ± 11). The study concluded that the matrix was a suitable delivery vehicle of cells for hair follicle engineering.
