TLDR Obesity and bariatric surgery can cause hair thinning and temporary hair loss due to nutritional deficiencies and stress.
The review "Association of Obesity and Bariatric Surgery on Hair Health" discusses how obesity and bariatric surgery can negatively impact hair health. Obesity can lead to hair thinning due to its effect on stem cells in hair follicles. Bariatric surgery, a weight loss procedure for obese patients, can cause temporary hair loss, known as telogen effluvium, due to factors such as rapid weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, and stress. Post-surgery patients often encounter deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals crucial for healthy hair, such as vitamin D, iron, zinc, and biotin. The review also found a higher prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) in patients with androgenic alopecia (AA), a common cause of hair loss. The emotional impact of hair loss on individuals is significant, indicating a need for further research on the relationship between obesity/bariatric surgery and hair loss.
