TLDR Over half of patients had hair loss after weight-loss surgery, especially women, linked to low zinc and vitamin B12 levels.
The study evaluated hair loss in 50 patients 6 months after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and found that 56% experienced hair loss, with a higher prevalence in females (46%) compared to males (10%). Significant differences in zinc and vitamin B12 levels were observed between those with and without hair loss, with lower levels in affected patients both preoperatively and postoperatively. The study suggested that monitoring and counseling on these micronutrients before surgery could help prevent and treat hair loss post-LSG.
