Serum Level of Apelin-12 in Acne Patients: Is It a Marker of Disease Severity?
April 2025
TLDR Higher apelin-12 levels may indicate more severe acne.
This study involving 90 individuals, including 60 acne patients and 30 healthy controls, suggests that serum apelin-12 could be a potential marker for acne severity. Acne patients exhibited significantly higher serum apelin-12 levels compared to controls, and these levels increased with acne severity. The study found a positive correlation between apelin-12 levels and body mass index (BMI), fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin levels, and insulin resistance (IR). Additionally, acne patients had higher triglycerides, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein levels, but lower high-density lipoprotein levels. The findings highlight the significant association between acne severity and IR, emphasizing the importance of managing IR in acne treatment.
