TLDR Samhwang-Sasimtang extract may promote hair growth and act as a natural hair growth agent.
A decade ago, a study was conducted to assess the antioxidant activity and hair growth effects of a natural herbal ethanol extract, Samhwang-Sasimtang (SS). The extract demonstrated potent electron donating ability and free radical scavenging activity. The hair growth effects were tested on 40 seven-week-old male mice, divided into four groups. After four weeks of application, the group treated with 3% minoxidil showed the highest hair growth, followed by the group treated with 2% SS. Histological observation revealed that the ratio and thickness of hair follicles, the enzyme activities of ALP and γ-GT, and the hair growth factors IGF-1 and VEGF were significantly high in the same order. Hair growth inhibition factors, TGF-β1 and Caspase-3, were reduced in the groups treated with SS extract. The results suggested that SS extract may be effective in promoting hair growth.
