TLDR Alopecia areata may be linked to higher heart disease risk.
This study examined the association between alopecia areata (AA) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) levels, a marker of subclinical myocardial injury, in 45 AA patients and 45 healthy controls. Results showed that AA patients had significantly higher hs-cTnT levels, suggesting a potential link between AA and subclinical cardiovascular involvement. The study found correlations between hs-cTnT levels and both the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score and disease duration. Nail involvement was also associated with higher hs-cTnT levels. These findings indicate that AA may have systemic implications beyond dermatological symptoms, emphasizing the need for cardiovascular risk assessment in AA patients.
