TLDR Severe alopecia areata may increase the risk of heart-related diseases.
This study involving 59 patients explored the link between alopecia areata (AA) severity and arterial stiffness, finding that severe vascular stiffness correlated with higher Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) scores and pulse-wave velocity (PWV). It suggested that severe AA might increase the risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases, with lifestyle factors like alcohol consumption influencing SALT scores. However, no significant correlation was found between AA severity and factors like visceral fat or arterial age. The study's limitations include its single-center design in Iran and cross-sectional nature, indicating a need for further research with larger, diverse populations to clarify these associations.
