TLDR The scalp fat tissue of men with hair loss shows changes in gene activity that may contribute to their condition.
The study "Adipose transcriptome in the scalp of androgenetic alopecia" used RNA-seq analysis on adipose tissue samples from 4 male participants with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) to identify affected signaling pathways. The researchers found 1,060 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with 522 upregulated and 538 downregulated. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway, relevant to adipose tissue metabolism and hair cycle, was notably downregulated in the bald AGA scalp. This suggests that adipogenesis via PPARγ is likely downregulated in AGA patients, potentially contributing to hair loss. The study proposes a new perspective in understanding AGA and calls for further investigation with a larger sample size.
