TLDR MRI reveals thinner scalps and smaller hair follicles in people with androgenetic alopecia.
This study used MRI to analyze the anatomical changes in the scalp and hair follicles in androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study found significant differences in the thickness of the scalp and the size of hair follicles between individuals with AGA and those without. The AGA group had a thinner hypodermis and entire scalp, as well as shallower hair follicles. MRI can be a promising new method for quantitative and objective analyses of AGA.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
