Finasteride in a dermatologist survey remained the preferred long-term treatment for androgenetic alopecia despite reported sexual, psychological and physical side effects. Vertex balding and cancer risk was associated with lower testicular germ cell tumor risk and possibly higher high-grade prostate cancer risk, though the prostate link was weakly supported. Alopecia areata and cancer risk showed slightly lower overall cancer risk but higher lymphoma, breast, kidney and bladder cancer risk. Alopecia areata and atopic disease was associated with markedly higher rates of atopic disease, food allergy and chronic urticaria.
