    GlossaryStretch Marks (Striae Distensae)

long, narrow streaks on skin from rapid stretching or growth

Stretch marks, also known as striae or striae distensae, are long, narrow streaks or lines that develop on the skin when it is stretched rapidly, such as during pregnancy, rapid weight gain, or growth spurts. They occur when the dermis, the middle layer of the skin, is torn due to the stretching, leading to the formation of scar tissue. Initially, they may appear red or purple but often fade to a silvery-white color over time.
