    GlossaryStratum Granulosum (Granular Layer)

layer where skin cells start to die and form keratin

The Stratum Granulosum, also known as the Granular Layer, is a thin layer of cells in the epidermis, the outermost part of the skin. It is situated between the Stratum Spinosum and the Stratum Corneum. In this layer, keratinocytes begin to die and form a waterproof barrier by producing keratin and lipids, which are essential for skin hydration and protection against external pathogens.
